Anyone who thinks that racism does not exist in the 21st century is either a racist themselves, blind or ignorant. Racism never disappeared; it got covered up for a while, but is really rearing its ugly head again. The media highly emphasized racism against blacks, and now it’s the Asians who are getting the spotlight (but not in the good way).
Last year, there was much talk about Black Lives Matter, a lot having to do with the death of George Floyd in Minnesota. For some reason, this year, the emphasis has shifted toward Asians. I know that Blacks have been on the receiving end of a lot of shit for the longest time, and that during World War II, Asians got rounded up into internment camps (read: imprisoned with no rights or habeas corpus), but why are they all of a sudden getting the shit beat out of them? Is it because people think Asians overall are to blame for this whole coronavirus pandemic? Are a billion and a half Asians seriously responsible for this worldwide disease? I highly doubt it.
Personally, I have no problem with people from any given race, religion or whatever category. The populace of any given country in general just wants to survive their day-to-day. Most people don’t give a damn about anyone else’s problems. As with most any problem, it’s a few bad apples that spoil the entire crop. The crimes and sins of a select group of any given race makes the rest look equal and tarnishes the good name of the majority. I have known and worked with people from many backgrounds. Just at Cracker Barrel, I have worked with black people, Asian, Latin, European and people from here. I don’t have a problem with any of them—I got along with all of them. The ones that I have the most issue with are the ones born in this country—some of my white coworkers. I worked at a truck stop once, and I came across many, many black drivers. Turns out that they were some of the nicest people I’ve ever seen. In other places of employment, the same thing. Some of the hugest jackasses I ever came across were Caucasian. Entitled white people who thought that you should worship them just because they frequent our business. That’s not to say that I haven’t come across assholes of other backgrounds, because I’ve seen extremely rude Hispanics, blacks, Middle Eastern, etc.
Another section of racism that angers me is the use of pejoratives—derogatory nicknames, such as the one for black people that rhymes with trigger, the dreaded “n-word”. I despise when people use such terms when talking about others. It would be so easy to just respect others for who they are—human beings. However, someone has to get butt-hurt and offended because they have a need to feel superior to others and put them down. Groups like the Aryan Nation, the KKK and other “White supremacists” should all be taken on a boat to the middle of the ocean and torpedoed and sunk. That, or launched in a rocket to deep space. No one race is superior to any other. Most white people are good; most black people are good; most Asians are good; and so on, just modify the racial preference. It’s because of certain groups and/or individuals of any given race that the rest are given a black eye and a bad name.
Here I give you today’s quote:
“Although slavery may have been abolished, the crippling poison of racism still persists, and the struggle still continues.”– Harry Belafonte
